A good group . . . of friends

Just had coffee with a group of friends this morning, much the same as I have for the past 20 or so years.  Every Wednesday morning from about November 1st through April or so depending on weather, a group of local golf industry folks meet for coffee.  We switch to once or twice a month for lunch during the busy summer months.

This group originated about 23 years ago with 6-8 Superintendents who had courses very near each other.  It was an opportunity to share experiences, techniques, problems, and equipment.  In about 1988, through a friendship, I was invited as the first non-Superintendent to come along.  It was never said but understood that this was not an opportunity to sell (thankfully).  It was about friendship and laughter.

Over the years it has transformed from all Superintendents, to now include a number of sales guys, but the unsaid rule still applies.  It is not unusual to have all three equipment companies represented as well as others from the seed and soft goods side.  We all get along wonderfully, with lots of laughter, exchanged information about course conditions, industry news and sometimes products.  Some have retired and still show up.  New people are always welcome.  Bonds have been made and all that makes this industry so rewarding is represented by this small group of guys.  For me, its a contact group that I can bring new product ideas to; for the sales guys it’s a chance to know each other; and for the Superintendents, it’s got to be refreshing knowing that while the sales guys compete for business, it is done fairly and honorably.  Life is too short and I think that our little group gets it.

    Steve,
Your professional friendship has always been appreciated. Not sure when you will have time to blog when you are so “busy” with all that is going on in your world. Looking foreword to your words of wisdom on the economy, golf industry analysis, and retirement. Or are you better versed on cigars, resteraunt reviews or dieting?
    Take care.

Q: Is the course going to be good this year?
A: Just a moment while I check my crystal ball

Q: Are you going to be on budget?
A: Depends on how many “emergency” projects the greens committee comes up with

I have met with these guys for over 10 years before I retired. Steve, you are correct in saying that we have no selling there, but it is a good way of knowing what the superintendent is looking for at a particular time, so we in the sales end can get our people to realize any new trend that the manufacturers have missed. Don’t worry, there is still that competitive edge, which makes it even better. Just having you there to stir the pot once in a while, when you are not traveling, is an experience. Where are you headed next? When will ParAide sponcer a nascar team? Big Don

A blog you say. I have never written in one, but you would be the first guy I would write to as you are the first guy I have blogged. When will you find the time? All my thanks for the help you and your team have given me over the years. Just had a good chat with Pinhigh yesterday and he had me laffing so hard I about cried.
Lots of snow up here in Canada. Looks likes it’s going to be a long winter.
All the best to you and yours this Christmas and into 2009.
    All my best,
    Margaret
